‘Music from Two Shores’
June 9th 2012
Music from Ralph Vaughan Williams and Aaron Copland will form the part of a varied and interesting programme for Uttoxeter Choral Society’s forthcoming Summer Concert. Taking place at 7.30pm on Saturday June 9th 2012 at St Mary’s Church, Uttoxeter, the concert will include pieces from Vaughan Williams’ Five English Folk Songs and Copland’s Old American Songs, along with Eric Whitacre’s Seal Lullaby and the moving Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen. Tickets cost £10 and are available from The Musicians Centre, Uttoxeter, on the door, or via www.uttoxeterchoralsociety.co.uk
Musical Director, Anthony Rose said, ‘The choir really have to dig deep for this concert. Not only are some of the pieces challenging musically, Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen for example, but they are demanding emotionally too. The Lux Aeterna is a rollercoaster of emotions, deep sadness, euphoric highs and everything in between, all packed into thirty minutes. In the second half we perform, amongst other things, Copland’s response to a country trying to find their own unique musical style and heritage, with his two sets of Old American Songs. Copland goes where few composers ventured before, by tapping into the American heartland. This concert is set to be an enjoyable transatlantic musical journey.’
UCS Chairman, Fiona Shaw added, ‘We have really enjoyed rehearsing for this concert, which brings together some very different styles of music. I think the audience is in for a real treat! We are also very grateful to our concert sponsors, The Glenthorne Vetinary Group, for their generous support’.
The 2012/2013 season will see this long-running choir (the third oldest in the country) celebrate its 130th anniversary with a gala concert in November 2012.
