Review-Hound of the Baskervilles

Should you be lucky enough to be visiting the Edinburgh Fringe this year try to make time to go and see The Alleyne’s Fringe Project’s The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The project brought their show, adapted by Tim Kelly, to the Brewhouse for two nights.
It is a fast-paced, original adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tale which sees Sherlock Holmes and Watson pit their wits against the fearsome beast of Dartmoor and a cunning murderer.
Although the audience was fairly small they made up for it in their appreciation of this young group of actors who pulled out all the stops to entertain us.
From Holmes and Watson’s 100-mile-an-hour arrival at Baskerville Hall to the, if you’ve read the book or seen one of the many films, final familiar denoument the plot races along.
The cast are all excellent but one is compelled to say that George Edwards’ Sherlock lifts the tempo when he is on stage. His playing contains the required maniacal energy that has been brought to the role recently by both Jonny Lee Miller and Bendedict Cumberbatch.
If there were to be a criticism I would ask that the cast learn that they do not have to move all the time; that stillness can be a virtue.
All in all a thoroughly entertaining show and I hope they do well in Edinburgh with The Space UK in Venue #45. The will be performing eight times between August 1 and 9 (no show on August 3).
The Alleyne’s Fringe Project is a group of aspiring actors, technicians, musicians and artists within the Uttoxeter area who have a passion for theatre.
They have used their mini-tour to raise funds for the Donna Louise Children’s Trust based in Staffordshire.
Burton and District Arts Council is delighted to have been able to help towards their visit to the festival with a grant from out funds.
